Act now Utah or this could be your children.

OK Utah when can you all get over the fact that not everyone is Mormon and the more you push our ideals and values on non-Mormons the more they will resent us as a whole? I know personal agency is a hard one to wrap our brains around, I mean how could God allow 1/3 part of the host of Heaven to go away. I mean why didn't he just force them or make up artificial rules they had to follow to keep them in Heaven? He knows they will be better off in the long run anyways so why not use some of that omnipotent power to some Holy advantage?

With this in mind I came across this little story on another blog about Utah state Legislature talking about how the mere fact that alcohol is served at restaurants will tempt the poor children of Utah to drink more. Beyond just being a silly argument philosophically as a Mormon I have to fight this one. Other then just making us look crazy and naive it goes against our very basic beliefs of agency.

At the core the question is "does the restaurants belong to the patrons or the owner?" I motion that the restaurant belongs to the owner and as such he has control over his property. Customers have a choice on which restaurant to go to and as such if they think their little Molly Mormon and Peter Priesthood children will be turned into raving alcoholics at the mere sight of a couple shots of vodka they can go right on down the local Mormon friendly establishment without giving the unholy establishment their money. Thanks to this little think called "supply and demand" These unholy establishments will go under for lack of patronage in Utah.

However this logic is way outside the realm of possibility to your average "Republican/Mormon" who is convinced they need to force their will on everyone else. And yes it is FORCED morality, anything the government has to make a law for then becomes something they have to force. People, from what I have experienced don't like to be forced and when they are forced to accept some one else's morality they don't think to themselves "I love that my Mormon neighbors are forcing me to do what their religion tells them. I think I will join their church just save myself and them the trouble of forcing me to do that as well."

Get a freaking clue Utah.

  1. Not all Utahns think everyone is Mormon. It's just that a large majority of the mormons in utah county think all utahns are mormon. Thus the name "Happy Valley"

  2. Having lived in Utah for my college and graduate years (and because so much of my family still resides there)--I even maintain some of my bills and banking in Utah--I feel like I have to jump in and defend just a little bit.

One of my buddies actually sent me this story last week and I admit to having choked on my diet cola. There ARE, admittedly, those that believe we cannot allow children to even walk past a bar in a restaurant--mostly, I believe, those are people who have not lived outside of Utah for any extended time and who do not realize that most restaurants come with a bar. Period. That's the way the world does things.

Go to McDonald's if you don't like it.

But that being said, realize that the Legislature in Utah is a peculiar animal. Utah is typically seen as an incredibly Conservative state. However, for as Conservative as the populace is, the elected officials have extremely liberal tendencies.

    That, and serious mental disorders.

But the people themselves have a lot more sense than this, by and large. At least in my experience.

They just keep voting these morons in office. My buddy is a county delegate and jumped on board a candidate's bandwagon. This candidate was truly conservative and had some spectacular ideas; hearing some of these ideas and promises, I believe that this is the kind of public official that we need to clone and farm out across the country.

    He lost to the incumbent.

    What does that tell you?

OK. Maybe I've just shot my own argument square in the foot. The people are smart enough to see past this kind of anti-agency crap, but not smart enough to vote the idiots out of office.

Maybe I have done more damage than good.

    I will shut up now.

At least I do not live there any more.
