Delegate vs. Trustee

A Delegate is - Any one sent and empowered to act for another; one deputed to represent; a chosen deputy; a representative

A Trustee is - One to whom something is entrusted : one trusted to keep or administer something: as a member of a board entrusted with administering the funds and directing the policy of an institution or organization

Is our government set up to elect Delegates or Trustees to Congress and which is better? I believe a Delegate is better than a Trustee, but if Congress was made up strictly of true Delegates all policy would always be majority rule. Is majority rule always the best? Normally I would say yes, but considering my views appear to be in the minority...... What do you all think?

  1. My understanding of the process is that delegates are selected to then go to convention and elect those in congress along with those running for other offices. With that being said, there are no delegates or trustee's in congress. They are elected employees given the charge of managing the affairs of the government's they represent.

Majority rule is the best way. Thinking that a majority doesn't have a voice in government is almost like a monarchy or class rule like what was in England before we broke off. The minority land owners and wealthy had their way while the rights of "lesser humans" held no weight. Majority vote doesn't mean that the best policies are enacted, but the principles of freedom of choice are upheld. That is a higher ideal.

  2. Personally, I'm inclined to think the trustee system better protects against tyranny of the majority as well as 'short-termism" that characterizes so much of the economic policy decision of Congress for the past half century.
