Sex and our identity

Share |
With so many people in the world being defined by their sexual preference and promiscuity, I question why that seems to be  the case? We hear people say, "I'm Gay", or "She's a slut" and so on. A common phrase is, "You are what you eat", but are we to assume that "You are what you have sex with" is now a colloquialism? The implication seems to be there. It would seem that the end result of this categorization is a catch 22.

For me, I hope to be known for my accomplishments, for how I served my family, my church service, and my contributions to society. I do not wish to be known for who or what I had sex with. In society there are quite a few labels that ARE placed on people based on sex. Pedophiles and rapists, are publicly recognized by their sex choices. Do gays want to be separated or segmented in society in similar fashion?

  1. I'm sure most of them don't. Just like blacks don't like to be categorized by the skin color, gays for the most part don't like to be categorized by their sexual preference. In both cases however, discrimination and the natural resistance to it moves people toward emphasis and pride about what makes them different. If there weren't so much homophobia there might not be as many gay pride events. There simply would be no reason for them.

  2. OH SNAP! Not even posted for a full day and immediately someone drops the "Gays are like Blacks" civil rights bomb. Stop comparing apples and oranges. They are nothing alike. Sexual preference is a choice, skin color is not. STOP!

  3. OH SNAP! Religious belief is a choice, skin color and sexual preference are not.

  4. Religious belief is a choice, what's your point? And no, you are wrong, let me be very clear in this statement - choosing to engage in homosexual acts is just that - a CHOICE. We've discussed this on this blog before, and there is a difference between impulse and action, it's what separates humans from animals. Animals have an impulse, and they indulge that impulse. If we indulge in every impulse we have as humans what separates us from animals then? We are divinely created - in the image of God, and it is our role in this life to learn to master our bodies and learn to control impulses.

  5. I thought the entire point of the marriage equality movement is so the GLBT community could stop being [s]segregated[/s] segmented and separated.

  6. That's just it, the GLBTC (C is for sexually confused which encompasses them all) movement is not about stopping their segregation from society, it's about seeking societal approval for something that they inherently know is unnatural and incorrect. It defies nature. Case in point, Civil unions. I'm not opposed to civil unions, if it encompasses all of the same governmental "perks and benefits" which it does, why is it not good enough? Why does the GLBTC community still persist in seeking to redefine the very term of "marriage" to encompass their lifestyle? Wouldn't, shouldn't a civil union be satisfactory if it allows a homosexual to visit their partner in the hospital where otherwise they may be denied visitation rights? Isn't that what it's about? NO, it is not. It is about seeking societal approval. When society in turn approves it, then that society is ripened for destruction. Pompeii? Rome? Sodom?...... the U.S. can go down that path, and we will reap the same reward.

  7. Choosing to engage in heterosexual acts is a choice too. No one is forcing you to, so just master your body and learn to control your impulses.

You do have a point that the word marriage represents a traditional and religious concept and it should not be used by government at all. The government should ONLY license civil unions without discrimination on any basis other than the normal basis in contractual law: that the parties be above the age of majority and be of sound mind and be acting without coercion.

  8. I did not mean for this post to be an attack on gays. My intent was to question or dig deeper into the notion that sex is the cornerstone of individual identity with our modern society. The way people dress can send a messgae, just like many of the other "banners" that we wave in declaration of who we are individually.

I don't get taxed based on much sex I have with my spouse. I don't put put on sexual identifiers to anything I do even though it would seem that society does so commonly. Gays just happen to e one of those that stand out with this with the phrase, " I am Gay!" why not some other, less private distinction.

Perhaps this is just another indication that we are an over sexed society?
